ImagePope Benedict XI has delivered his first Easter message, following Catholic tradition by issuing a heavily qualified call for peace and understanding in the world. "Easter is a time to remember Jesus' love for the whole of humanity," the Pope said from St Peter's Basilica, "without forgetting that homosexuality is an abomination and abortion leads to damnation."

ImageAs the Nepalese monarchy cracks down on pro-democracy demonstrators, Alexander Downer has called on the Nepalese King not to do anything that could result in boat people arriving to Australia. He has asked Nepalese authorities to show restraint, and not do anything that could fit the UN's definition of 'life-threatening'.

ImageThe sluggish French economy received a boost from an unlikely sector last week – the very students trying to bring it to a standstill. Glazier Jean Petit was one of those who benefited. "Business has not been good for a long time, but now I've got more work than I can finish", said the Paris resident, who has had to hire extra workers. "Shop windows, house windows, cars – even anarchists are placing orders for glass to throw at police."

ImageAustralia has granted asylum to 47 West Papuans after they proved that remaining in Indonesia would see them victimized by Indonesia's satirical cartoonists. "If we stay here, we will be in constant fear of being attacked by  illustrators with highly limited imaginations," said one Papuan. "We must find a new life in Australia, a land where cartoonists have to come up with some kind of satirical comment rather than just drawing rutting dingoes for no reason."
 
China offers uranium safeguards: will store nuclear waste in Taiwan Print E-mail

ImageAustralia has forced China to accept a rigorous set of procedures for receiving Australian uranium, including undergoing a gruelling press conference in which the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao had to use the word "safeguards" thirty-eight times.
