Rainbow Bridge is one woman’s tribute to her dead sausage dogs. Not content to wallow in her own grief, she has also tacked on images of the deceased pets of her friends. Like Cloudy the cat. “Cloudy was the fluffiest cat in the universe, and she absolutely LOVED Christmas. Cloudy disappeared three weeks ago. Robin fears she might have been attacked by the pack of coyotes that roam the neighborhood (since their own habitat in the foothills is almost gone now). Sigh. I loved Cloudy.”

The highlight is a descriptive passage (author: Anonymous) that explains the magic of Rainbow Bridge:

Is that you, God?

“Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.......’

When I get to the Rainbow Bridge, I expect to be met by an entire herd of wiener dogs, but I know Misha will be leading the pack!”

Sam was the world’s ugliest dog. He looked like the guy from Tales from the Crypt. After living a long and successful life as a late night talk show guest, he died peacefully. If the blog is anything to go by, Sam’s owner’s life is still centred around a repulsive mutt that died three months ago.

"SAM passed away on Friday, November 18. News traveled very quickly, and Susie received emails from around the world expressing condolences, and many expressing how SAM had affected their lives. There has truly been an outpouring of love. SAM touched people in very different ways, from eliciting almost uncontrollabe laughter to being a little frightened, but mostly it was SAM's and Susie's relationship that enormored them to so many. There can be love, affection and respect for even the seemingly unattractive souls of this world. There have been emails telling Susie that more and more animals that had been considered unadoptable in the past are now being taken in and loved by new parents. Although SAM will be missed by millions, he surely did his good deed while on this earth!"

Sam’s owner now divides her time between grieving and selling novelty calendars with pictures of Sam. It’s what he would have wanted.

Snails:  That's it, really

This online pet cemetery is full of sad stories of canine and rodent bereavement. But there’s nothing sadder than this man’s howl of anguish at losing his pet snails.

“This is a picture of my beloved pet Amazonian water snails. At one point I had 24 snails living in my acquarium. Each snail was roughly the size of a human hand, with a weight of up to 250 grams when alive. The shell had a color that varied from white to brown. It was very appealing to the eye. They came from Ecuador, a gift from my ex-wife after she returned from visiting her aunt. One by one they died. I don't know why. Maybe it was the water or lack of nutrients or old age. But I'm heart broken. They were all I had left after my wife divorced me. Last year, I was down to two snails. Then last week both of these died. Now there's nothing left of our relationship. Nothing.”
