Zimbabwe cricket team backs calls for Aust boycott Print E-mail
Friday, 25 May 2007
ImageThe Australian Government's call for Ricky Ponting's side to abandon its tour to Zimbabwe has been echoed by their opponents. "We've suffered enough in this country without having to get thrashed by Australia again," captain Prosper Utseya said.

"In my view, being made to face Brett Lee when you've only made the team because of a racially biased selection policy is cruel and unusual punishment," he said.

But the Zimbabwe Cricket Union insists that the home team has a chance, pointing out that due to the rapid inflation crisis currently affecting the country, the Australian XI would be facing off against the Zimbabwean MCCCXXIV.

In a fiery speech, Mugabe slammed John Howard for being racist, offering to forcibly displace the Prime Minister from Kirribilli House and hand it back to the black population. Mugabe's position has won him support from Bob Brown and Margo Kingston.

In a bid to resolve the deadlock, the ICC has suggested the game be played at a neutral venue, but the Zimbabwean Government angrily disagreed. "We are tired of this sort of interference from the international community, who do not understand how Zimbabwe works," President Mugabe said. "Next they'll be suggesting that we hold our elections at neutral venues."

Prime Minister John Howard says that if the tour is allowed to proceed, the oppressive Zimbabwean regime will be handed a publicity coup, an allegation that Mugabe quickly dismissed. "It's ridiculous to say that I am seeking propaganda benefits from the tour," he said. "The country's newspapers will write positive headlines about me whether the Australians play or not."

President Mugabe has said that if the Australians don't ultimately end up touring, his security forces are equally adept at beating Zimbabweans.
