Jessica Rowe's surprise pregnancy announcement has allowed the troubled breakfast host to reach a new level of empathy with her audience. "I'm going through the same experience as many Today viewers," said Rowe, in a press conference full of awkward banter. "Not only because I'm having a child, but because I find myself being violently ill between the hours of 6 and 9am each morning."
After a week of positive publicity, Rowe strained her newfound good relationship with Nine by spraining her wrist after a fall at her home. Nine executives were forced to remind the Today host of the network policy that all injuries to its high-profile talent must occur on Dancing On Ice only.
Rowe's few fans are delighted by the news. "I was really worried by how skinny she'd gotten with all this stress," one said. "So it's great news that she'll now be eating for one at least."
The former Ten newsreader has managed to keep her sense of humour despite her difficulties this year, recently saying that she intends to return to Today after she has had the baby. Nine CEO Eddie McGuire described her statement as "the funniest thing she's said all year".
But most commentator think Rowe will survive at the network. "She's been a failure, sure, but at least she's been a high-profile one that's lasted all year," one commentator said. "Compared to the likes of Magda's Funny Bits, she's one of the network's most successful stars."
