43 die in Annie musical exit crush

Annie... the cause of much agony

[Edition 38] MELBOURNE, Friday: At least 43 people are dead after a theatre audience stampeded a narrow exit during the hit musical Annie.

The fatal crush occurred shortly after the show’s commencement, when the young orphan heroine launched into her signature song ‘Tomorrow’.

“It was just bedlam,” said one theatre patron. “She’d barely sung the first few notes when the whole of the stalls got up and rushed for the exit. Everyone was climbing over each other trying to get out.”

Another patron was highly critical of theatre staff for failing to unlock the exit doors until well into the second chorus.

“I’ve never seen scenes like it,” she said. “I can still hear the screaming and the wailing in my head. Someone needs to teach that girl how to sing.”
