Bruce Samazan says past nine years as real estate agent is “method acting”

After completing the rare triumvirate of Neighbours, Home and Away and E-Street, Bruce Samazan disappeared from the public eye. Most assumed his star had burned briefly and bright; that his oeuvre would now be confined to dinner theatre and perhaps an ironic Virgin Mobile campaign. But a few close friends knew otherwise. He wasn't finished, but instead preparing for the role of his life.  

Bruce Samazan was looking for something. At first he thought he'd found it in bit parts in unsuccessful Australian films. But after immersing himself in the writings of Konstantin Stanislavski, he slowly realized that he was looking for something else. "It turns out I was seeking emotional truth, not looking for a role in a London pantomime" he says. Samazan submitted a bogus CV to the Essendon branch of Century 21 Realty, and fortunately no one recognized him. So he began the research that consumes him to this day.  

"I've spent almost a decade learning every nuance, every thread in the emotional tapestry of property men," says the 1992 Silver Logie Winner. "I've done the sales, I've done the open houses, I've sat in the sales target meetings and when I haven't been giving a presentation, I've just observed. To anyone, right now, coming in off the street, I am a real estate agent." 

Were the times when he forgot that he was, in fact, acting? "The craft requires a dedication that is absolute. Just look at DeNiro in Raging Bull or Cape Fear. For me, giving up fame and fortune to work a low-level white collar job for nine years was a huge sacrifice. A lot of times my friends say ‘is it really worth it for 28 grand plus commission'? It may not seem like it now, but the day someone comes to me and says "we want you to play ‘real estate agent #1'", and I make that part completely believable, they might understand. But I doubt it."
