The swing to Labor is largely thought to be a result of the Howard Government’s proposed industrial relations reforms. “If the Prime Minister continues to speak about nothing except a tremendously unpopular industrial relations program right up to the next election and he also does no pork-barrelling or negative ads about Labor, the next election could be quite close,” Newspoll’s Sol Lebovic said, prompting Alan Ramsay to call the 2007 election for Labor.
Opposition Leader Kim Beazley also had a strong personal showing in the polls, benefiting from a big increase in his popular approval to 35% and in his caucus approval to 8%. “35% of voters now support my leadership,” said Beazley, “compared to an additional 19% who support Labor but not me. If this trend continues, before long I’ll be even more popular than a hypothetical, leaderless party.”
However, Mr Beazley’s approval ratings remain weaker than the Prime Minister’s. “Obviously, what the Australian people really want is the Labor Party – but led by John Howard,” Neilsen pollster Mark Bancroft explained. “Which is what they have at the moment, really.”
Mr Beazley is confident that Labor will retain its strong lead right up to the last few days of the 2007 election campaign.
