[Edition 43] ALICE SPRINGS, Tuesday: Two weeks after the shocking disappearance of British backpacker Peter Falconio, and with the assailant still at large, police have been disappointed by the lack of follow-up attacks against other British backpackers in the country.

Police have strongly condemned the gunman, who only managed to dispose one of the two backpackers. They’re reported to be seeking the gunman for “questioning” as well as “employment opportunities.”

Helping police with their inquiries has been Falconio’s girlfriend Joanne Lees, who narrowly escaped being accused of the murder by making up an unlikely story about how she got away while bound and gagged. The media have questioned several parts of Lees’ story, such as why she was unable to sketch her attacker while running away from him, and why she was unaware of the scientific names of the plants she supposedly hid behind.

The police were impressed by her detailed identikit description of Billy Bob Thornton, and her precise account of the 4WD as “white” and having a “bull-bar”.

Lees said she will follow police advice to get on with her life, and will continue to travel around Australia starting with some relaxing fruit-picking in Childers and then hitchhiking to the Belanglo State Forest.
